HELPFUL TIP:

Don’t be afraid to pair weather conditions with your setting choice to contrast or reinforce a character’s emotions. Hopelessness might be mirrored in the relentless drizzle of rain and the resulting heavy drag of one’s clothes; alternatively, this feeling can stand out in stark contrast to sunlight dancing over fresh snow. Can weather also provide symbolism, thereby enriching the reader’s experience? Think about your goal for the scene and the mood you are trying to create, and then layer your description with meaningful choices.
SIGHTS:
DAYTIME:
Ever-changing, the daytime sky rarely appears uniform. The presence of clouds, varying amounts of sunlight, the time of day, and many possible weather conditions can alter the sky from one moment to the next. While the sky is generally a shade of pale blue, the color can deepen to cerulean or even gray when there is heavy cloud cover.
Clouds can be white or gray and come in many formations: wispy layers, billowy puffs, lattice-like stacks, and feathered strokes. The sun sometimes illuminates clouds so they appear backlit, with one side glowing brightly while the other is in shadow. When the sun shines through gaps in a cloud mass, rays appear to shoot towards the ground, creating a beautiful effect. Viewers might also see planes flying overhead, jet fuel trails that slowly dissipate, birds circling high on the updrafts, colorful hot air balloons, helicopters, drones, skydivers, and even planes writing or pulling messages across the sky.

NIGHTTIME:
The sky at night can be an astounding display of stars, constellations, planets, and the moon in its various stages—all set against a velvety black background. Blinking satellites and airplanes, along with the occasional shooting star, will cross the the night sky, along with any cloud forms that are present. Clouds may block out the entire sky or only portions of it as they are blown along their paths.
