HELPFUL TIP:

When planning a cast member's talents and skills, think about how genetics, personality traits (both positive attributes and flaws), past experiences, environment, and the character's roles (within a family, a community, and society) all factor into what strengths may form. These special qualities should tie into the story, not only to make the character interesting but also to help him achieve his goal.
DEFINITION:
The growing of herbs, fruits, vegetables, or flowers

DESCRIPTION:
A character with this skill has a knack for cultivating and tending plants. Gardening can be a personal hobby or a professional career. It is an activity that can be done in solitude or in teams, in rural or urban areas.

BENEFICIAL STRENGTHS OR ABILITIES:
Flexibility and dexterity
Physical strength
Being able to read the weather
Being handy enough to build a greenhouse, repair fencing, construct wooden raised beds or vine fences that one may require to garden

POSITIVE TRAITS SUITED FOR THIS SKILL OR TALENT:

REQUIRED RESOURCES AND TRAINING:
Gardening can be self-taught, or an activity that one does with other gardeners (family members, neighbors, or friends). Understanding climate growing zones and ensuring one is planting the correct seeds is a must unless one is gardening in a climate controlled area, such as a commercial greenhouse. With the large amount of books, magazines, websites, and discussion groups online dedicated to gardening, one can learn to garden quite quickly, and troubleshoot problems as they occur. A gardener needs good quality seeds or to purchase seedlings, as well as healthy soil, adequate sun, water, and tools to manage one's garden.

ASSOCIATED STEREOTYPES AND PERCEPTIONS:
That most gardeners are elderly women with wide-brimmed hats (stereotype)
If a man gardens, it's because he's an older man needing a hobby (misconception)

SCENARIOS WHERE THIS SKILL MIGHT BE USEFUL:
An apocalyptic scenario where food is scarce
An emergency where one's knowledge of medicinal plants could mean the difference between life and death
When a stress outlet is needed for a character
The aftermath of a traumatic event, where gardening might be therapeutic
A scenario where the unique items one grows are vital to a person's or community's survival
A scenario where the by-products of a garden are vital to the plot line (bees, butterflies, pollen, etc.)
