Settings should always be chosen with care. Consider the emotion you want your viewpoint character to feel and how setting choices, weather elements, and symbolism might build a specific mood in the scene, create tension and conflict, or even raise the stakes.
SIGHTS:
Portholes and ladders leading down into the boat
Narrow corridors with stairs and handrails going up or down
Walls covered in paraphernalia (handholds, hoses and wiring, valves, pipes, gauges, switches, buttons, indicators lights, electronic readouts, boxes, fire extinguishers, flotation devices, clipboards, phones, signage)
The control room (many consoles covered in buttons and readouts, the pilot and co-pilot)
The sonar room with sonar men tracking contacts on consoles filled with bright green traces
The radio room filled with equipment for decrypting and encrypting transmissions
The torpedo room (torpedoes, missiles, overflow berthing, machinist mates doing maintenance or running checks)
